Vor mehr als 9 Millionen Jahren begann La Gomera aus dem Wasser des Atlantischen Ozeans aufzutauchen: eine Zeitspanne, die dreimal länger ist als die Zeit, in der Hominiden auf der Erde leben. Nicht viel, wenn man es mit dem Alter unseres Planeten vergleicht, aber mehr als genug Zeit für die Überlagerung von Vulkanausbrüchen, um geduldig und stetig das Gebäude zu errichten, auf dem Sie gerade stehen.

Parallel dazu grub das Wasser neue Formen in die Lavaströme und pyroklastischen Schichten, die die "Vulkanschmiede" geduldig anhäufte. Vulkane bauen auf, Erosionsmittel zerstören. Doch vor knapp 2 Millionen Jahren, als der Homo habilis in Ostafrika die ersten Steinwerkzeuge herstellte, erloschen die Vulkane auf der Insel Colombina. Der Bau des Gomero-Gebäudes kam zum Stillstand. Seitdem arbeitet die Erosion ununterbrochen daran, die Insel zu zerlegen.

Das Ergebnis sind tiefe Schluchten und Täler, die die Oberfläche von La Gomera regelrecht zerklüftet haben: Der Barranco de Valle Gran Rey, den Sie vor sich sehen, ist zweifellos einer der spektakulärsten. Und genau hier, wo Sie sich befinden, beginnt sein Quellgebiet.

Hace más de 9 millones de años, La Gomera comenzó a emerger de las aguas del océano Atlántico: un periodo de tiempo tres veces más largo que el tiempo que vivieron los homínidos en la Tierra. No mucho si lo comparas con la edadde nuestro planeta, pero sí tiempo más que suficiente para que las erupciones volcánicas en capas construyan con paciencia y constancia el edificio en el que te encuentras actualmente.

Al mismo tiempo, el agua esculpió nuevas formas en las coladas de lava y en las capas piroclásticas que la 'forja volcánica' acumulaba pacientemente. Los volcanes se acumulan, los agentes erosivos destruyen. Pero hace casi 2 millones de años, cuando el Homo habilis fabricó las primeras herramientas de piedra en el este de África, los volcanes de la isla de Colombina se extinguieron.

La construcción del edificio Gomero quedó paralizada. Desde entonces, la erosión ha trabajado sin parar para diseccionar la isla. El resultado son profundas gargantas y valles que literalmente han cortado la superficie de La Gomera: el Barranco de Valle Gran Rey que ves frente a ti es sin duda uno de los más espectaculares. Y justo aquí, donde estás, comienza su cabecera.

More than 9 million years ago, La Gomera began to emerge from the waters of the Atlantic Ocean: a periodof time three times longer than the time hominids lived on Earth. Not much if you compare it to the age of our planet, but more than enough time for the layering of volcanic eruptions to patiently and steadily build the building you are currently standing on.

At the same time, the water carved new shapes into the lava flows and pyroclastic layers that the 'volcanic forge' patiently accumulated. Volcanoes build up, erosion agents destroy. But almost 2 million years ago, when Homo habilis made the first stone tools in East Africa, the volcanoes on the island of Colombina went extinct. The construction of the Gomero building came to a standstill. Since then, erosion has been working nonstop to dissect the island.

The result is deep gorges and valleys that have literally jagged the surface of La Gomera: the Barranco de Valle Gran Rey that you see in front of you is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular. And right here, where you are, its headwaters begin.
