Originally I had another cache in mind for today, but in the morning when I woke up I felt bad and somehow weak and so I changed my plans. In the afternoon I felt better and decided to go to Weiz to visit this cache. I am not enthusiastic about the name of the cache and what's behind it, but I enjoyed the walk and the cache.
This cache is well suited for cachers who like to go for a medium length walk along easy terrain, but it is certainly not suited for birthday parties of children. I know that the name is not intended in this way anyway, but rather in the pejorative way which is the reason why I am not happy with the name. (I am very thankful that I am again able to visit caches of this type and I do know that this is nothing that one can take for granted. But of course anyone can name his cache in whatever manner he/she wants to.
As I did not know how to go to the suggested parking coordinates, I parked my car at the main square (to have a look at my map) and then realized that the trail is starting there anyway. The alternative parking coordinates are only of use during the week when parking is not free at the main square. At first I looked for the free maps at the wrong point (namely at the information centre), but then I realized that I have to look at the other side of the street.
As I could not find any sign belonging to the Naturerlebnis trail, I simply followed the signs of another nature trail (Weiz-Mortantsch). After a while I then encountered also signs of the Naturerlebnis trail. For me Stage 1 was the most impressive stage. The nearby hornbeam (BTW: the French word for hornbeam is charme, interesting, isn't it?) is an impressive natural monument. Shortly after Stage 1 I had some difficulties to find the right way, but after a short confusion I succeeded. Today some of the paths leading through forest areas were very muddy and wet - so it was not possible to proceed there quickly without getting very dirty which I wanted to avoid. Somewhere on my way I also passed an elder plantation, but the plants looked more natural as the ones I have seen this year near Riegersburg and on my way to Pr3ach3rman's second letterbox cache as they were not cut in a very strange way. Stage 2 was already known to me. The short walk along the Raab was nice. There was quite a lot of water and I was glad that I did not have to wade through the Raab.
Looking carefully for signposts after Stage 2 is not that helpful as both the essential signpost and the cache description are misleading. One does not have to turn around (umkehren), but to turn right. It might have been easier just to offer the waypoint where one has to leave the path along the Raab and turn right and walk up the hill. In any case watch out for the point where a small creek crosses the trail. If you then look up into the forest, you will
see further signposts of the trail and realize that one of the arrows of the signpost at the Raab-level points into the wrong direction (from the other side it is clear where one has to go).
At Stage 3 I realized that I should have checked the website of the Kraeuteroase (herbal oasis) at home, The small leaflet that was available in front of the house did not tell me enough to make my decision whether I should dare to go inside the garden (I only had a quick look at the front area) and have a look myself. The presence of a dog let me leave and continue my way. In any case, I would have welcomed a few lines of information in the cache description (more than just telling me what I could guess anyway), but certainly that's a matter of taste.
Some part of the walk to Stage 3 and to Stage 4 was a bit boring, but there was hardly any traffic. I passed along some sort of party. People were preparing maize over an open fire there and enjoying themselves. I have to admit that I would have missed the very interesting object at Stage 4 without the cache as it is off the way and did look less impressive than it was from the distance. Some of the wayside shrines one comes along the trail are surprisingly old. I would like to learn more about their history, but that's typically rather hard as the internet hardly offers any information on such rather local topics.
As I had assembled the coordinates of the cache already at Stage 3 and as there was no need to compute anything, there was no need to sit down at the bench for reasons implied by this cache, but I sat down nevertheless as I wanted to have a close look at the wayside shrine, I then continued my way to the cache which I quickly found. From there I followed the nature trail back to my car. Given the way the cache route is set up, I am quite sure that none of the visitors of this cache really mastered the full nature trail which at some point includes a somehow strange triangle-like shape (after Stage 4). In this way, the overall length is of course shorter than 12.4km. I agree, however, that the pure walking time will be less than the 4-4.5 hours even for the complete trail. I do not think that the breaks play the essential role, but rather that the designers of the nature trail had in mind that the visitors study and read the various information signs along the trail and probably will also pay a visit to the Kraeuteroase (herbal oasis). In that case, 4 hours might be a reasonable guess for people walking in a moderate pace. In order to need only two hours one has to walk with a rather brisk pace or have quite long legs at least.
Thank you for hiding and publishing this cache and for showing me a nature trail that I have no yet been aware of. Parts of it look quite new. I enjoyed the cache and the walk and was very relieved that I did not have to search for a cache/micro every about 300m as last week. A multi cache with virtual stages is much more relaxing for me.
I wondered, however, a little bit why only a single stage of the cache deals with the nature trail. In particular, close to Stage 2 there would have existed a lot of options to include some of the signs of the trail.
