Pozzo di San Patrizio / Sankt-Patricks-Brunnen

Nachdem 1527 der Papst Clement VII von gegnerischen Truppen aus Rom vertrieben worden war, siedelte er sich mit seinem ganzen Gefolge auf der festungsartigen Stadt Orvieto an, auf einem Felsenplateau auf Tuffstein. Um Belagerungen besser widerstehen zu können, wurde der berühmte Architekt Sangalo beauftragt, sich etwas auszudenken wie man das Grundwasser die 62 Meter den Berg hinauf bekommt.

Der Brunnen hat die Form einer Doppelhelix, zwei sich einander nicht berührende Wendeltreppen sollten den Maultieren einen Weg zum Grundwasser hinunter sowie einen anderen Weg wieder  hinauf bieten ohne dass sich Gegenverkehr behindert. Eine alte Idee von Leonardo da Vinci.
