The Tunnel:

Until the 1970s, traffic from the Ammer valley to the Neckar valley had to cross Tübingen through the city centre. Pedestrians and bicyclists had the choice to use the steep and narrow city streets or climb over the castle hill. To provide an alternative, Tübingen built two (or rather three) tunnels: One for pedestrians and bikes, and a double tunnel for the main road B28 (now calles B296). The bike tunnel was finished first, and due to pressure from the ADAC car club it was used for car traffic until the road tunnel had been opened in 1979. In 2007 also small motorcycles were banned from the bike tunnel, and now it only serves polluction-free traffic.

However, the cycle route was never really finished: While it's a good way to reach the railway station or the schools, there is no useful connecting route going further south to Derendingen. Still, there are plans and a bridge over the railway might be built in the next few years - almost 50 years after the tunnel.

The tunnel was planned during a rather hot phase of the Cold War, and has been equipped to serve as a nuclear shelter in case of war. The gates to close off the portals were prepared and would have had to be flown in by heavy-haul helicopter. The form of the entrance with the concrete roofs, the technical rooms at the southern portal, and the iron lockers in the wall are remains of the shelter technique.

The Cache:

You are searching for something between micro and nano - only a logbook, more or less, and about 40 to 50 meters from the southern portal. The coordinates may lack precision, but there's no GPS coverage underground anyway. The hint should make the hide unambigous.

The cache can be reached from the pedestrian lane. Do not step on the cycle lanes. You'll never find a chance to search without muggles around. Try to find a moment when these look away.

P.S.: I believe that this cache is suitable for wheelchair drivers. No help from other people should be needed.
