Lohauser Denkmäler: Ehrenmal

Although I live for a couple of years in Lohausen, I never really noticed this memorial. Probably due to the fact that I never visit the church next to it. ;-)

The erection of the memorial was initiated by the local citizens group (Bürgerverein) to honor the soldiers from the districts Lohausen and Stockum who died during the first World War.

The collection of donations started in March 1925, as the funding should be done completely out of own capital. The City of Düsseldorf donated later 1000 Mark, after the memorial was finished the district Kaiserswerth donated another 500 Mark for the enclosure of the estate.

The estate itself was provided by the family Lantz. It could not be donated, as it was part of a fidei commissum.

The base of the memorial is a 7-ton-diorite from the Westerwald, representing the indestructible unity and amain force as allegory. The eagle created by sculptor Josef Pallenberg reflects the grief for every dead soldier, at the same time the raised view of the eagle shall give hope for a later life.

The memorial was inaugurated on November 08, 1925. The bronze plate with the name of the 55 victims of WW-I was later replaced with a plate to remind on the victims of both world wars.
