Coelln - Berlin

Berlin emerged by joining the two towns Cölln and Berlin. This cache guides you from Cölln to Berlin to three sites which Johann Stridbeck chose as motifs for pen and ink drawings in 1690. At each location along the 1 km path you find the coordinates for the next site or the log book. Please be careful at stages 2 and 3 (stealth required). Who does not know Berlin's (Cölln's) oldest bridge ?Jungfernbruecke? ( N 52° 30.824', E 013 ° 24.087' ) should visit it before beginning the search. It is located about 120 meters away from the starting point. The Jungfernbruecke bridge was built as a wood bridge in 1689 and given the name ?Spreegassenbruecke?. Today?s appearance  originates from remodeling in 1798.

Brüderstrasse
The coordinates of the starting point correspond to the view point of the draftsman. The ?Galgenhaus?, Bruderstrasse 10 (number 1 in the drawing and called ?Herr Happen Haus?) can be found easily. It was built in 1688 for the Chamber Councillor Heinrich Philipp von der Happe. The building served since 1737 as the provostery of the Petri Church. The ruin of the church was removed in 1960 ( N 52° 30.807', E 013 ° 24.25' ). Today the building is home to the currently closed ?Galgenhaus? museum (Brüderstarsse 13 is the ?Nikolaihaus? museum). The street?s name Brüderstrasse (Brothers Street) can be traced back to a monastery of Dominicans founded there in 1300. In front of the ?Galgenhaus? (Gallows House) in 1735 an innocent servant was executed for supposedly stealing silverware.

Mühlendamm
Here, at the former natural ford of the river ?Spree? lies the cradle of Berlin. In the 13^th century a crossing was created and because of the water mills built at it called the Mühlendamm (mill dam). For a long time this was Berlin?s economic center. The Mühlendamm was remodeled shortly before Stridbeck made the drawing. The Elector?s mills were reconstructed, new stores and bridge colonnades of stone were built. In 1888 the Muhlendamm was removed and replaced by a bridge and a sluice (not the current one). Good-bye Coelln, welcome Berlin.

Klosterstrasse
In the middle of the 13^th century a church made out of field stones was built next to a Franciscan monastery (to the north of the view point) . Remains of the church can be found today on the north wall of the ruin. Further information can be obtained from the nonprofit organization ?Foerderverein Klosterruine e.V.?.If you still have a bit of time you can visit Berlin?s oldest pub ?Zur letzten Instanz?( N 52° 31.045', E 013 ° 24.817' ) or look at the last pieces of the city wall next to the pub. There in 1658 people began to built a fortress wall and turned Berlin within 25 years into a citadel. The map of 1688 shows parts of this 80 m wide stronghold. Across the ?Letzten Instanz? is the church ?Parochialkirche? and worthwhile to look at inside.
