Germanenstaffel

The Germanenstaffel is a stairway leading with 117 steps from the Neckar bridge to the Österberg hill and the shortest way for pedestrians to the Österberg. Along the way you'll have a few nice views on the old city. Tip: After visiting the cache, continue up and after house nr. 16 turn right into the the small path to the "Wielandshöhe" viewpoint.

The stairway is named after the student's fraternity Germania because it leads along their property. The lower part is a staircase built in 1958 and definitely not one of the picturesque parts of Tübingen. The Uhland house (home to local poet Ludwig Uhland) which had previously been there had been the only house fully destroyed in the old city during World War II.

Because of disrepair the stairway was closed in 2011. After years of discussions the city council finally decided to repair the staircase and build a new way for the upper part. About 900000€ were spent until the new Germanenstaffel was opened in April 2017.
