if politicians build bridges. You'r standing at the memorial-stone for the opening of the "Nordstrasse" [~"North-street"].
That should replace the local railroad Flensburg-Kappeln being in deficit. Because of that the curve-radius are following the formerly rails. In some villages the railway stations still can be seen: Ringsberg, Langballig, Streichmühle, Steinbergkirche...
The first spade was stuck in 1951 in Steinberg, where a concrete-mill was raised. The needed sand was dredged in the harbour of Langballigau, shipped to Gelting and rinsed on the shore.
1200 employees did 200.000 "men's-day-work" and used 80.000 m³ [~2.2 mio. cft] concrete out of 27.000 tons cement. Across 10 bridges and 53 passages towards the part from the "Devils bridge" (Bismarck-St., Flensburg) to Hafendamm. There ½ million little granite cobblestones were built-in.
This 7 m [~22 ft] wide, 46,151 km [~28.677 miles] long concrete-road was the longest of that kind in Germany - apart from the highways.
In the years 1969 to 1976 the 22 cm [~8½ inch] thick concrete-plates were asphaltet with a bitumen-blacktop.

This milestone of road-engineering did cost incredible 15 mio. Dollars!
On the 26. of march 1954 the governor Friedrich-Wilhelm Luebke officially opened the cabinets and named the Nordstrasse as the "Interstate 199".
