Here you can download an Excelsheet for PDA or smartphone. Just insert the on your way determined values in the yellow fields, the coordinates of the next waypoint will be calculated and shown.

The way is a round/loop with 6-7 km length. Special equipment is not necessary, but a pocket calculator can help.
Tip for the coordinate calculation: if you get only one or two digits of position after decimal point, then fill up these with zeros from left, e.g. 47 gets 047!

Burst building projects are not alone a modern phenomenon, also in medieval times it gave such already. On the way to the cache you go past at the presumed building sites of the castle Rhineck and/or Herzogenstein, which was never finished out political reasons.
In 14. century Pfalzgraf Ruprecht I. wanted to build a further castle. The neighbours, the earl of Katzenelnbogen as well as the people of Oberwesel with support of the archbishop Boemund of Trier, agreed not at all with it. Anyway the Pfalzgraf had already established recently the castle Sauerburg over Sauerthal. Thus these decided to attack the Pfalzgraf before he could establish the new place firmly. Surprised by as much animosity, Ruprecht hidden its treasures, with which he wanted to finance the building of the castle. To not further escalate the fights, he stopped the building of the castle for a while. Although he hoped to resume later it was never continued. The treasure came into oblivion, but you can find it again if you follow the traces of the Pfalzgraf!

Start:
There are parking lots at the starting coordinates. Directly beside the parking lot there is a road sign ,,Oberstraße". A white sign with a red border is fastened at it. The number in the right half of the middle line before the comma results in A, the lower number before the comma plus 1 results in B.

1. Wegpunkt:
N 50° 06,A*33
E 07° 4(B-2),A*B*7+40
The roof is hold by how many on the ground standing beams?
    4 Beams: C = 10
    6 Beams: C = 11
    8 Beams: C = 12

2. Wegpunkt:
N 50° 06,A*C*3+117
E 07° 4(A-C+1),B*C*3+95
At the left, dark-brown door is a metal plaque placed on the lower right side. The cross sum of the construction year ("Baujahr") becomes D.

3. Wegpunkt:

N 50° 06,A*C*5+D*13
E 07° 4(B-D+1),A*C*D+A*C
Here you find art. The number of persons shown gets E.

Now go on the path down to

4. Wegpunkt:
N 50° 06,A*B*10-E*13
E 07° 4(B-D+1),A*C*D+E*33
At the upper edge of a rock again you'll find a number. It becomes F. Tip: look from the last bar of the rope to the top.

Now you have the choice. You must decide between the ,,challenging" or the ,,comfortable" way. You can reach the cache with both alternatives.

Way alternative A (like ambitious, raises the terrain up to 4 stars):
If the way so far was only something to warm up for you, then the next section is the right thing now, because from here you have a bit to scramble! On your ,,way" you will reach the special place, where castle Herzogenstein was possibly intended to be built because of it´s exposed position, even if today´s sources often mention another place, which you will visit later on your hike, too.
You need to "climb" down the rocks, but its not so hard as it sounds, you don´t need special equipment. Only a few meters the way down, in sight of waypoint 4, there is a tree with blue-white "Rheinsteig"-logo. From here proceed the diverging route and follow the small trail down (if you can find it) or a route by your choice over the rocks to
N 50° 0B,F*116+3
E 07° 4(B-D+1),F*80+5
Here at the intended building place of the castle you will find a prominent boundary stone which has a number. These becomes G. Afterwards go from here in bearing 22°, then you will meet a mediaeval cart way, which will lead you to the 5. waypoint.

Way alternative B:
If you decide for the easy way, you have to calculate the needed number for the next waypoint by solving a arithmetic problem:
The wife of the Pfalzgraf, the Pfalzgraf and their daughter are together (A+B+B+C+D+E+F)*2 years old.
The wife of the Pfalzgraf is (F+1) years younger than the Pfalzgraf, but he is (F-3) times older than the daughter.
How old was the daughter one year ago? This becomes G.
Go via
N 50° 0(D+2),F*G*G+69
E 07° 4(B-D+1),F*G*G-69
to the next waypoint.

On your way you pass a spot, where you can still see some old leftovers of a mediaeval building. Some people say that here the build of the castle was started, but others say, that this was another building, whereas the real building ground of the castle was placed at way alternative A.

5. Wegpunkt:
N 50° 0(C-D),G*18-A
E 07° 4(A-C+1),G*8
Here again is a sign. How many trophes/verses has the green text (without headline)? Multiply the number with 10, then this becomes H.
If there is a problem, you can find the value of H written also on one side of a nearby bench.

Now you have all informations to find Pfalzgraf`s treasure! To reach it, go via

N 50° 0(D+2),(F*G+G*H)+23
E 07° 4D,([F-E]*H)

to the cache, which is hidden at the coordinates

Final:
N 50° 0(D+2),(F*G+G*H)+15
E 07° 4D,([F-E]*H)+70

Finally go via the next coordinates to the starting point by following the ways:

N 50° 0(D+2),(F*G+G*H)-57
E 07° 4D,([F-E]*H)-145

A recommendable after-cache-location where you can also stay overnight is the Landgasthaus Blücher with distillery and winetasting at the coordinates
N 50° 06,289 E 07° 45,450.
You can get more informations about the area and history e.g. here or here.

This cache is also listed at geocaching.com and can logged there, too.

Heute gut gefunden.

Barfuß-Wertung: 5/5 Sternen, trotz Matsch.

Dose Koblenzer-typisch: Logbuch in Tüte in Dose in Tüte in Tüte in Tüte.

Available 12 May 2015 Koblenzer has maintained the cache

Temporarily not available 09 May 2015 Koblenzer has disabled the cache
