Description English (Anglais)
The garden of the former castle Starnberg, surrounds a wall with several ornamental towers that was already visible on paintings in the 16th century. The garden and castle separate a much older ditch, probably built at the time when the castle was still a castle. Today's connection between the garden and the castle, a viaduct with three brick arches, dates from the 18th century.
Built in the 16th century, this high walled enclosure of the garden suggests a castle garden dating back to the Renaissance. The still existing old water tower on the southern wall provided water to gardens fountain and plants. For this purpose, the water from the area of the "Seven Springs" was pumped here.
There are clear parallels between the design of this garden and the transformation of a late medieval garden over the newest of the Munich Residence. During the reign of Duke Albrecht V (1550 - 1579) the dance house and the garden with the water tower probably originated here in Starnberg. The court garden in Munich was also expanded at the same time by a pleasure house and a water tower.
The Renaissance gardens, located north of the Alps, were inspired by the magnificent gardens created in Italy in the 15th century. The hallmark here was the autonomy of the garden, which had no spatial relation to the castle or the palace. In its center was usually found a marble water fountain. The subsequent rose-covered arcade was part of the interplay between the various, symmetrically designed plantings.
From 1803, the financial administration, which was housed in the castle, used the castle garden for private purposes. In 1980, the city of Starnberg leased the castle garden from the Ministry of Finance, re-landscaped the garden and made it publicly accessible.
