The "langer Filz" area is a high moor, meaning a marsh, which is increasing it height. The water it feeds on is solely provided by rainfall. As a consequence the moor is acidic and low in nutrients.
All living marshes need humid climates in order to grow. The amount of precipitation must be enough to replenish the water lost through draining and evaporation.
The rain moorlands in Europe develop since approximately 11,000 years (beginning of the Holocene) after the retreat of the last ice sheets. Regarding its emergence one differentiates silting-up raised bogs and root-genuine raised bogs. The former developed secondarily from the silting-up of lakes or from drying out arms of running waters (see illustration right in the sequence). Initially "low moores" developed under influence of the groundwater (mineral ground water). Oxygen deficiency and high acidity in the constantly damp substrate restrain the decomposition of died plant parts and lead to the peat formation. Thus the raised bog grows very slowly over the level of the ground-water level, from there the name raised bog. After the developing peat grew out of slowly from the influence of the mineral ground water, growth changed to a raised bog formation, i.e. these moorlands were only fed from now on by the rain water with it's very low content of mineral salts. Root-genuine raised bogs, also Versumpfungsmoore against it directly mentioned and developed on the mineral underground of mineralsalzarmer areas without previous Niedermoorbildung (see illustration left in the sequence) either as primary moorland formation by Versumpfung before times dry mineral grounds, for example due to Rodungen, climate change, decreased infiltration, or secondarily by exceeding a raised bog on the neighbouring mineral ground. The education of a typical raised bog is a very slow process, which lasts even with favorable, unimpaired operational sequence centuries until thousands of years. Further there is a number of so-called transition and intermediate moorlands, which unite characteristics of high and Niedermoore in itself in different portions (see definition moorland).
