Introduction:
The third cache in the Bird Cache Series is about a nocturnal bird, for that reason the
first part of it is only possible to find at night.
It is not necessary to go off official paths to find the necessary information. You will need
a strong flashlight or even better a head torch.
You also need a QR reader!

The Owl
(Lat. Strigiformes) is a bird of prey with special capabilities:
First, a pagan belief was that the owl was the deliverer of (bad) news and thus a bird of
ill-omen. In Harry Potter owls are used as letter carriers. Owls are also said to be wise.
Especially the Eurasian Eagle-Owl is a symbol of wisdom in modern western culture. Also
the physical capabilities; Unlike all other birds the owl is capable of silent flight and is
thus able to hunt prey successfully. Owls exhibit specialized hearing functions and ear
shapes that also aid in hunting at night. The large eyes, which are at the front of the
head, allow for very good binocular vision, but they can’t move their eyes. The owl can
rotate it’s head 270° to compensate for this.

Owls in Idioms
The most well known would be to “bring owls to Athens”, which means to do something
redundant, pointless or futile. It refers to the city of Athens in the time of Ancient
Greece, where silver coins were minted with the image of an owl on the back side and
referred to as owls. It would then be pointless to bring more money to this rich city. The
saying is said to originate from the Greek poet Aristophanes.
Night owls are people who go to bed very late.
This information and more can be found at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owl
and

Now to the cache:
Since this is a multi, you must follow the following instructions:
Follow the RED reflectors and the small owls. You will always find these at or near places
where you have to change direction or find information needed to find the final:

First small owl:

Search for this at the south end of the parking area behind the path. Follow the path on
the side that you find it.

Second small owl:

Search for this one just past a fork in the path. Follow the left fork.

Third small owl:

Search for this one along the right side of the path. (If you find a white-red reflector, you
have gone too far.) Shine you light about 5 m to the East (90º) and search for the large
owl. It will tell you the secret for getting to the log book at the final. At the next
opportunity turn left.
If the big owl doesn't want to answer you, there is a replacement station that will help
you:
To do this, aim 161 m from your location towards 358 ° and look for the small
replacement owl, which will also show you the secret of the big owl.
Then go back and follow the further directions and the reflectors.

Fourth small owl:

After reaching the road (please be careful of traffic) follow it for a short distance and turn
left at the next possibility. Now go ahead and watch out for the owl. Here you have to
turn right.

Fifth small owl:

Search for this one some distance(!) along the path on the right side. Look at it carefully
and you will find the information about where the final is!

The Final:

Find the final at N 48º 9.??? E11º 39.???. You will find the log book there. To get at it
you need the information found at the third small owl!!!

Path back to the parking area:

To make the way back more interesting, you will find the coordinates for
the bonus in the
final. Ideally this can be found on the way back

Information to the location of the final:

The location at the edge of private property was chosen to protect the cache itself from
vandalism, since it is unique and also fitting to the topic owl. The property owner has
agreed to the choice of this location and knows about it. The property owner knows that
geocacher will be on the property in this area to log the cache. I still request that all the
geocachers behave unobtrusively so that I won’t hear of any complaints.
The only other tools needed are a QR-reader/App and a pen or pencil to log.
Please do not use force to open the cache. The owls will thank you.
I hope that you have fun with this third cache in the Bird Cache Series.
Happy caching.
