The memorial against war and fascism

At this place stood the ?Phillipp-Hof?, a representative appartmnent building from the period of promoterism, which was destroyed at 12^th of march 1945 during a bomb attack against Vienna. Hundreds of people which looked for safety in the cellars found the death there. The trapped couldn?t be rescued, their total amount was never identified. In the commemoration year in 1988 there was built a ?Memorial against war and fascism? by the city of Vienna. The memorial was concepted and erected by the Austrian sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka.

At the front face of the memorial the ?Door of violence? is situated. It is made of granit, like it was dragged by thousands of concentration camp prisoners over the ?death stairs? in the "KZ Mauthausen" in Upper Austria. The sculpture on the left should remind the victims of mass murdering by the Nazis which was done in many concentration camps and prisons in the third Reich. It should also remember for the victims of resistance and prosecution because of national, religious and ethnic membership, mental and physical disabilities and sexual orienteering. The figures on the right door column is dedicated to all victims of war.

The first victims of the nationalsocialist regime were close to the political opponents the jewish people. After 12^th of March 1938 jewish people were forced to clean the streets from painted political slogans. The genoflecting streetwashing jew is remembering for this debasement and degradation, which went forward before the merciless prosecution and killing began.

?Orpheus enters the hades?; a sculpture of a man which rises up to a marmoreal block, is a memorial for the bomb victims and the death of the people which stayed in resistance against the national socialists under insertion of their life.

At the 27^th of April 1945, during ongoing fights in the western part of Austria, the members of the new or renewed political parties proclaimed the reerection of the Republic of Austria. On the ?Stone of the Republic? are parts of the at that time created government declaration and the names of men which signed it.

The ?memorial against war and fascism? was discovered at 24^th of November 1988. As an attestable memorial it should serve for our remembrance about our darkest epoch of our history. It is dedicated to all victims of war and fascism.
