Beschrijving    Deutsch (Duits)

Mount Vesuvius (Italian: Monte Vesuvio, Latin: Mons Vesuvius) is a volcano east of Naples, Italy. It is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years, although it is not currently erupting. The only other two such volcanoes in Italy (Etna and Stromboli) are located on islands, independent from Vesuvius and still active.

Vesuvius is on the coast of the Bay of Naples, about nine kilometres (six miles) east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It is best known for its eruption in AD 79 that led to the destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. It wasn´t clear to the people, that they were living close to a volcano. The information of previous eruptions thousand of years ago was lost and therefore so many people lost there life.
It has erupted many times since and is today regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the population of 3,000,000 people now living close to it and its tendency towards explosive eruptions.

A volcano generally is an opening, or rupture, in the Earth's surface or crust, which allows hot, molten rock, ash and gases to escape from deep below the surface. Volcanic activity involving the extrusion of rock tends to form mountains or features like mountains over a period of time.

The Vesuvius is part of the Parco Nazionale Vesuvio and can be visited by everyone. Please note the park's hours (09:00 to 17:00 or 18:00, season depending). It is wise to come in the early morning or late afternoon, otherwise it could be overcrowded. A normal ticket costs 6,50 Euro, but it is worth it. Reduced price is 4,50 Euro, children under 8 years are free.

Logging requirements : first go to the given coordinates (volcano rim) and take a picture of you together with your GPSr and the crater in the background. Please attach this picture to your log after approval. Then you have to solve the following task and send it to vesuvius(at)gmx-topmail.de .
Task : Vesuvius has a special shape, because it is part of a second volcano (mountain). Try to describe this unique shape and send us an email together with the name of that second older volcano.
If your answer is correct, you will receive our logging approval.
Note : log entries without a picture will be deleted - sorry !
The terrain rating assumes that you are coming up by car or bus. It is also possible by foot

Have a nice time, enjoy your visit on this great volcano and take some nice pictures.
Homer Jay

I found this cache on our italy-trip this week. The location and the scenery are great but unfortunatly we had a miserable guide [:(!], who was more interested in selling wine than explaining the history of this location.

happy hunting, Rainer
