The "Tote Gebirge" covers over 1000km² and is the largest limestone plateau in the Eastern Alps. A winter or spring ski-traverse will be an unforgettable experience and you are almost guaranteed to be alone. The cache is situated half-way along the long leg from the Pühringer-hut to the Tauplitz-Alm. Its location is on the marked trail - no detour necessary.

Best time: February to April (Depending on conditions also possible in December (short days!) or May).
Not recommended in summer due to dwarf-pine cover.

Recommended route:
Times are for good snow without track and can be significantly higher if snow is deep or wet. Possible en-route peaks are in italics.

Tag 1: Loserhütte — Grießkogel — Wildenseehütte (3-4 Std)
oder Offensee — Weißhorn — Wildenseehütte
Tag 2: Wildenseehütte — Appelhaus — Redender Stein — Hochkogel — Pühringerhütte (4-5 Std)
Tag 3: Pühringerhütte — FAR FROM CIVILIZATION — Weisse Wand — Planka Mira — Grosses Tragl — Tauplitz (Linzerhaus/ Hollhaus) (5-7 Std)

Alternative:
Tag 3: Pühringerhütte — Gr. Priel — Prielschutzhaus (4-6 Std)
Tag 4: Prielschutzhaus — FAR FROM CIVILIZATION — Tauplitz (Linzerhaus/Hollhaus) (7-11 Std)

Possible extension:
Zusatztag 1: Tauplitz — Liezenerhütte (4-5 Std)
Zusatztag 2: Liezenerhütte — Wurzeralm (4 Std)

Many other routes are possible

Very fit hikers can find the cache during a day excursion (March/April; >40 km!)
Loser - Stögerweg - Hochklapfsattel - Augstwiese - Appelhaus - Jägerleiten - Große Wies - Hochkogel - Elmwiese - Hetzkogelsattel - Gastkar - Schneiderkare - Steirerseealm - Tauplitz (9-11 Std)

Hint
The trip is also possible in the opposite direction but this is not recommended as one misses two interesting descents

ATTENTION:

This is an alpine cache. It should only be attempted if you are experienced, well equipped and fit and conditions are good. Although the track is marked with wooden poles, they are sometimes very far apart or missing and cannot be seen when the visibility is poor. Navigation with the 1:25.000 map of the Austrian Alpine Club is difficult due to the undulating terrain which has few clear structures. Make sure to enable the tracking function of your GPS to allow a track-back in case of bad weather.

Watch for sinkholes - don't traverse depressions

03. septiembre 2016 npg ha encontrado el geocache

Von der Tauplitz mal zum Großen Tragl empor... dort herrschte soviel Civilization das auch nach stundenlanger Wartezeit nicht an ein Suchen zu denken war.
Tja ...dann schweifen wir halt in die Ferne [:D].
Also erstmal den Gegenhang mit Hütte anvisiert - dann dem Bartlrücken entlang zur Winterroute gefolgt.
Erstmal erreicht gings in stetem auf und ab der Route folgend in Richtung Weißer Wand und von hier weiter zum Far from Civilization.
Zum Schluß mal kurz die Orientierung verloren...etwas abgestiegen und auf relativ bewquemen Weg die letzten Meter bis zur totalen Einsamkeit [:D].
Latschen sind quasi gar keine zu queren (außer eventuell die letzten 500m -dort wo ich kurz die Orientierung verlor und die verlatschte Wintermarkierung zeitschonend umgangen habe [:o)]).
thx npg - retour den selben weg.. kurz überlegt noch zur Weißen Wand aufzusteigen...aber dann entschieden mein Glück noch einmal (erfolgreich) beim Tragl zu versuchen [:D]

11. mayo 2008 salzkammergut han escrito una nota

Im Rahmen einer Eintagesdoppelüberquerung Tauplitz-Gr. Priel-Tauplitz den Cache kontrolliert. Auch wenn die Temperaturen in der Nacht nicht unter den Gefrierpunkt sinken, so reicht es für eine gute Harschdecke, die bis etwa Mitte des Vormittags ein rasches Vorwärtskommen ermöglicht. Derzeit sehr gute Bedingungen wohl noch bis Ende Mai möglich.

Wer den Cache nicht im Rahmen einer zwei- oder mehrtägigen Durchquerung heben will (wie wäre: Tauplitz-Pühringerhütte gefolgt von Pühringerhütte-Loser) kann auch vom Parkplatz Tauplitzalm in 2.5-3.5 Stunden zum Cache gehen und dann noch Weisse Wand und/oder Plankamira anhängen. Früh starten!
