Die Pflaumenkuchenbank

The „Pflaumenkuchenbank“ (Plum cake bench) is situated in the valley of Kesselgrund in Freital. It is caused by some citizens, who live here in the part of town, that is named Birkigt. In 2007 they intended to renew an old picnic place. During the weeks before Easter they cleaned up the area, cut the trees and prepared the ground. On Holy Thursday a big so-called Easter Fire was held.
In September 2007 the bakery Schmidt produced the „longest plum cake in the valley of the Weißeritz“. The cake was sold at the 8th Street Festival in Birkigt and the earned money was used for the construction of the bench. (Year after year, since 2007, different bakeries try to top the mark of the „longest plum cake“ by producing just a longer cake. The cakes are sold at the Street Festival and the money is spent to several volunteer institutions.)

In 2008 the bench was constructed and built with the strong help of the enterprises Ihmann and Ferrant. The bench was inaugurated during the 9th Street Festival.

Sitting at the bench you have a good view to the lower part of the Kesselgrund and up to the Birkigter Hang in Dresden. The meadows are used for feeding cows and sheep. Nearby there is a brand new apple tree plantage (by Holger Stein). There are cultivated some rare, very old and nearly extinct apple species like Bunter Martinsapfel, Gelber von Theisewitz, Claußnitzer Borsdorfer, Schlesischer Lehmapfel or Carmeliterrenette. In autumn the apples are used for good apple juice and fine fruit liquor.
