Berliner Stolpersteine - Strausberger Straße

The Stolpersteine (stumbling blocks) remind of the deportation, expulsion and murder of the victims of the Nazi regime. The blocks are placed at the last known freely chosen place of residence of the victims.

The first Stolperstein was set in front of the historic town hall of Cologne by the artist Gunter Demnig on16 December 1992, exactly 50 years after the “Gypsy”-deportation command of Heinrich Himmler. You can read the first lines of the deportation decree on this stone.

The first Stolperstein of the current design, with a single name on each stone, was set by Demnig in January 1995. In 1996, the first blocks in Berlin were installed. Cologne officially approved the project in the year 2000. Since then, the Stolperasteine, with approximately 32,000 stones (end 2011), have developed to the world's largest decentralized memorial.

The stones are completely made by hand. Demnig wants this fact to be understood as opposed to the mechanized mass destruction and as an expression of respect for the victim.
