The Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science is a formally independent non-governmental and non-profit association of German research institutes publicly funded by the federal and the 16 state governments of Germany. It is one of the leading German institutions in the area of basic research and the 83 research institutes conduct basic research in the interest of the general public in the natural sciences, life sciences, social sciences, and the arts and humanities.

This cache is supposed to collect all Max Planck Institutes. The institutes can be found on this website of the Max Planck Society.

The cache and its log entries can be found here.

Your task:

Visit one of the institutes and take a pictures of you or your GPS in front of the writing that names the institute. In addition, take a photo of the building itself.

You can log, if the entry is in accordance to the following conditions:

Start your entry with the name of the institute and the city where it is located. In parentheses, please add the coordinates of the picture you took.
Give a short and reasonable (!) statement on the area of research which is conducted here or to the institute itself (e.g., architecture of the building, location and surrounding area of the institute, your own experience with the institute, etc.).
Add the pictures you took to the log entry. If you find an arial photo you are welcome to add it, too.

The Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung at Mülheim an der Ruhr is almost one hundred years old, making it one of the Max Planck Society's oldest institutes. Time and again, the Institute has been a source of major technological impetus, including the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis for the production of fuels from coal, and Ziegler catalysts for the production of the major bulk plastics. Today, the Institute's activities are centred on research into energy- and resource-saving chemical reactions, with the focus on catalysis in all of its aspects. The aim of the researchers is to develop new, tailor-made catalysts – products that accelerate chemical reactions without themselves being changed. With the aid of catalysts, natural products and medically-active substances with a complicated structure can be efficiently synthesised; similarly, biomass can be converted to fuels and key basic chemicals.

Im Max-Planck-Institut der TU Dortmund wird biomedizinische Grundlagenforschung betrieben.
Chemie und Biologie dienen hier gemeinsam dem ganzheitlichen Verständnis der Zelldynamik. Die durch Identifizierung und Synthese naturnaher Wirkstoffsubstanzen gewonnenen Erkenntnisse dienen unter anderem der Aufklärung molekularer, zellkommunikativer Ursachen von Krebs.

Meine persönliche Beziehung zum MPI DO besteht lediglich darin, dass ich jahrelang auf dem Weg zur Arbeit daran vorbei gefahren bin ^^.
Durch diesen Safaricache habe ich mich jetzt etwas eingehender mit dem Gebäude und der dort betriebenen Forschung befasst.

Das Motiv für den Safari-Cache ** Max-Planck-Institute (Safari-Cache) ** habe ich nach langer Suche und einem weiten Fussmarsch hier gefunden:

Koords: N48° 15.721 E11° 40.222

In Garching bei München gibt es mehrere Max-Plank-Institute. Das Gebäude auf meinem Logbild ist das Institut für Physik und zu diesem Themenbereich brauche ich vermutlich nichts Erklärendes erwähnen.

Interessanter ist da schon die extraterrestrische Physik die sich allgemein mit physikalischen Phänomenen außerhalb der Erde beschäftigt. Warum dann hier auf der Erde geforscht wird, verstehe ich allerdings nicht :-)

Das MPI liegt etwas versteckt, aber nicht weit von den Fakultäten für Mathematik und Informatik der TU München in Garching.

Max-Planck-Institut für Kognitions- und Neurowissenschaften in Leipzig (N 51° 20.100 E012° 23.326)

Hier werden kognitive Fähigkeiten und Eigenschaften des Menschen und die zugrundeliegenden neurophysiologischen Prozesse erforscht. Besondere Schwerpunkte sind die grundlegenden Mechanismen menschlichen Denkens, der Spracherwerb, die Wahrnehmung von Sprache und Musik, Planung und Ausführung von Handlungen, das plastische Veränderungsvermögen des Gehirns und sein Einfluss auf verschiedene kognitive Fähigkeiten sowie die neuronalen und hormonellen Grundlagen von Zivilisationskrankheiten wie Bluthochdruck und Übergewicht und nicht zuletzt die Weiterentwicklung von bildgebenden Verfahren wie der Magnetresonanztomographie.

Es ist eines von drei MPI in Leipzig.
