Mercadillo Municipal

Die Gemeinde besteht in Valle Bajo (unteres Tal) aus den Hauptorten La Calera (am Hang), La Playa, Borbalán und Vueltas (am Hafen).

Das Tal bietet dank seiner terrassierten Kulturlandschaft mit einer Fülle von Palmen, den ausgedehnten Bananenplantagen und vielen verstreut liegenden kleinen Häusern einen geradezu exotischen Anblick. Hier hat es in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren besonders viele Hippies hingezogen. Mitunter wurde das Tal mit Aussteiger-Orten wie Goa oder Kathmandu verglichen.

Die Gemeinde Valle Gran Rey verfügt auf der Insel La Gomera über die mit Abstand höchste touristische Nutzung. Das Tal ist seit dem Ausbau der Zufahrtsstraße und dem Hafenausbau gut zu erreichen. Es gab eine deutlichen Zunahme von Hotels und touristischen Appartementhäusern von insgesamt rund 1400 Betten zwischen 1990 und 2005. Damit könnte aus dem bisherigen Individualtourismus nach und nach ein Massentourismus entstehen.

Zum Tal Valle Gran Rey gibt es nur eine Zufahrtsstraße. Diese führt vom Tal bis in den Nationalpark Garajonay. Von dort verbindet die Hauptstraße das Tal mit der Hauptstadt und dem Hafen von San Sebastián.

Nach dem Ausbau des Hafens in Vueltas kann Valle Gran Rey auch von Handels- und Kreuzfahrtschiffen angelaufen werden. Von November 2008 bis Februar 2009 bediente die Reederei Garajonay Express eine Schnellbootlinie zwischen Los Cristianos (Teneriffa) und Vueltas im Valle Gran Rey. Zwischen März 2009 übernahm die Reederei Fred. Olsen diese Linie bis zum 1. Februar 2012.

Am 14. November 2020 machte ein Felssturz die Straße von Vueltas zur Playa de Argaga in der Gemeinde Vallehermoso unpassierbar und sie wurde von Amts wegen endgültig gesperrt. Die Anwesen sind seither nicht mehr mit Landfahrzeugen erreichbar. Der Felssturz verfehlte einige geparkte Fahrzeuge nur knapp, niemand kam ernsthaft zu Schaden. In der Vergangenheit gab es an dieser Stelle Felsabbrüche mit Todesfällen. Entsprechende Schilder warnten vor der Gefahr.

Der Mercadillo de Valle Gran Rey ist einer der besten Märkte, wenn man auf der Suche nach Vintage-Objekten, handgearbeiteten Schmuck oder interessanten gebrauchten Dingen ist. Er findet sonntags von 9 bis 15 Uhr am Busbahnhof Valle Gran Rey auf der Insel La Gomera statt. Auf diesem kleinen Flohmarkt werden gebrauchte Schallplatten, Filme, Bücher und Zeitschriften verkauft, sowie Kleidung, Accessoires, Natursteine und Gemälde. Ein Must für jeden, der Vintage mag. Kunsthandwerk verschiedenster Art, aber auch Kleidung, Aloe Vera und Frisches aus dem Garten bieten die Markstände an und runden das Angebot ab. Der Weg hinauf zur Plaza lohnt sich!

El municipio está formado por los núcleos principales de La Calera (en la ladera), La Playa, Borbalán y Vueltas (en el puerto), en el Valle Bajo.

Gracias a su paisaje cultural en terrazas con abundancia de palmeras, extensas plantaciones de plátanos y muchas casitas dispersas, el valle ofrece una visión casi exótica. En los años setenta y ochenta atrajo a muchos hippies. A veces se ha comparado el valle con lugares de abandono como Goa o Katmandú.

El municipio de Valle Gran Rey es, con diferencia, el de mayor utilización turística de la isla de La Gomera. Desde la ampliación de la carretera de acceso y del puerto, el valle es fácilmente accesible. Entre 1990 y 2005 se produjo un aumento significativo de hoteles y bloques de apartamentos turísticos, con un total de unas 1.400 plazas, lo que pudo convertir paulatinamente el anterior turismo individual en turismo de masas.

Sólo existe una carretera de acceso a Valle Gran Rey. Ésta conduce desde el valle hasta el Parque Nacional de Garajonay. Desde allí, la carretera principal conecta el valle con la capital y el puerto de San Sebastián.

Tras la ampliación del puerto de Vueltas, también pueden recalar en Valle Gran Rey buques comerciales y de crucero. De noviembre de 2008 a febrero de 2009, la naviera Garajonay Express operó una línea de lanchas rápidas entre Los Cristianos (Tenerife) y Vueltas, en Valle Gran Rey. Entre marzo de 2009, la naviera Fred. Olsen se hizo cargo de esta línea hasta el 1 de febrero de 2012.

El 14 de noviembre de 2020, un desprendimiento de rocas hizo intransitable la carretera de Vueltas a Playa de Argaga, en el municipio de Vallehermoso, y quedó oficialmente cerrada para siempre. Desde entonces, las fincas ya no son accesibles con vehículos terrestres. El desprendimiento de rocas pasó rozando algunos vehículos aparcados, pero nadie resultó herido de gravedad. En el pasado se han producido desprendimientos de rocas en este lugar con resultado de víctimas mortales. Las señales adecuadas advertían del peligro.

El Mercadillo de Valle Gran Rey es uno de los mejores si se buscan objetos vintage, bisutería artesanal o artículos interesantes de segunda mano. Se celebra los domingos de 9 a 15 horas en la estación de guaguas de Valle Gran Rey, en la isla de La Gomera. En este pequeño mercadillo se venden discos, películas, libros y revistas de segunda mano, además de ropa, complementos, piedras naturales y cuadros. Una visita obligada para los amantes de lo vintage. Los puestos del mercadillo ofrecen una amplia gama de artesanía, así como ropa, aloe vera y productos frescos de la huerta, que completan la oferta. Merece la pena subir hasta la plaza.

The Mercadillo de Valle Gran Rey is one of the best markets if you are looking for vintage objects, handmade jewelry or interesting second-hand items. It takes place on Sundays from 9 am to 3 pm at the Valle Gran Rey bus station on the island of La Gomera. This small flea market sells second-hand records, films, books and magazines, as well as clothes, accessories, natural stones and paintings. A must for anyone who likes vintage. The market stalls offer a wide range of arts and crafts, as well as clothing, aloe vera and fresh produce from the garden, rounding off the offer. It's worth the walk up to the plaza!
